Welding softball teams earn spots in state tournaments – Greeley Tribune

Soccer

Northridge 19, Roosevelt 62, in Johnstown: In a Weld County battle, Roosevelt (7-0, 1-0 3A North Central 3) emerged victorious in a decisive victory over Northridge (5-2, 1-1 3A North Central 3). The Roughriders scored in every quarter and took a 21-12 lead at the end of the first period. Although the Grizzlies were within striking distance, Roosevelt scored 14 and 20 points in the third and fourth quarters, respectively, while Northridge was held to nothing. Roosevelt recorded 623 total yards versus 312 yards for Northridge. The Roughriders were led by junior Tucker Peterson with three touchdowns.

Valley 28, Weld Central 16, in Gilcrest: Valley (2-5, 2-1 2A Patriot East) clinched a well-deserved victory over Weld Central, led by three seniors. Giovanni Mendoza scored twice for the Vikings, while his senior colleagues Jason Gonzales and Colin Brown added one each. Valley scored on a reception, a run, a punt and a kick in the game.

Platte Valley 42, Fort Lupton 11, to Fort Lupton: Things quickly escalated for the Bluedevils (1-6, 0-3 2A Patriot East) when Platte Valley (4-3, 2-1 2A Patriot East) scored four touchdowns in the first half, versus just field of Fort Lupton goal. The Broncos continued their hot streak with two more scores in the third, while the Bluedevils added a touchdown and a two-point conversion to put a touchdown on the board.

Prairie 51, Fleming 52, to Fleming: Prairie fell in his road contest, despite his best efforts. The Mustangs scored in double digits for three of the four quarters, but the Wildcats narrowly edged them. Prairie recorded 475 total yards. Unfortunately, the team lost 130 yards due to nine penalties versus just 20 lost yards for Fleming, making penalties a major factor in the contest. The Mustangs are 5-3 overall and 5-1 in A-6 North play.

Separation 14, Resurrection Christian 24, in Separation: Resurrection Christian (5-1, 2-1 2A Patriot West) quickly took the lead with a field goal and a touchdown in the first half. The Cougars then added two touchdowns in the third. Severance (6-1, 2-1 2A Patriot West) tried to come back, scoring all his points after halftime, but he couldn’t make up the deficit. Resurrection Christian recorded six sacks against Severance for a total of 63 yards lost. It was the first loss of the season for the Silver Knights.

Dayspring Christian 36, Sedgwick County 6, Julesburg: Dayspring Christian Academy got off to a good start in their clash last week, scoring 18 points in the first quarter. The Eagles maintained their lead by scoring at least once in subsequent quarters, recording a total of six total touchdowns. Dayspring is 6-2 overall and 4-1 in the Plains A-8 league.

Highland 49, Estes Park 28, at Estes Park: Highland scored a landslide victory last week, rushing 389 yards on a total of 408. The Huskies had seven touchdowns, led by senior Caleb Polk. Polk contributed three rushing touchdowns and one fumble recovery touchdown. Highland is 5-3 this season and 2-1 in League 1A North with one game to play.

Pawnee 30, Weldon Valley 32, in Grover: It was Pawnee’s tightest game of the season, but the Coyotes weren’t quite able to secure the victory. Pawnee (0-6, 0-6 A-6 North) lost his sixth straight game with two games remaining.

Boys football

Union Colony 1, Rocky Mountain Lutheran 1 at Broomfield (2OT): Union Colony (2-10-1, 0-6-1 2A Mile High West) played a draw with Rocky Mountain Lutheran. The Eagles scored in the first half, taking a 1-0 lead, before the Timberwolves responded after the break. Union Colony lobbied Rocky Mountain to force 24 saves from the Eagles. Unfortunately, the Timberwolves couldn’t find the back of the net to break the tie.

Soccer

Greeley Central 20, Grand Junction 25, to Grand Junction: Greeley Central (1-7, 0-3 4A Northern 2) fell to the Warriors. The Wildcats only have two games left in their season after the loss.

Briggsdale 53, North Park 31, in Briggsdale: The Falcons beat the Wildcats for their first victory in two games. Briggsdale has two more games to play in the regular season and is 6-2, 3-2 in A-6 North.

Boys football

Roosevelt 2, Riverdale Ridge 4, in Johnstown: Roosevelt (6-9, 3-6 4A / 3A Longs Peak) fell at Riverdale Ridge at home to close his season. The Roughriders scored twice in the first half, while the Ravens scored three goals. In the second period, Riverdale Ridge added an insurance goal to which Roosevelt had no response.

Softball for girls

Windsor, 4A Regional State: Windsor (20-7, 8-1 NCAC) secured a berth in the state tournament last weekend, despite dropping out of its first game. The Wizards fell to Conifer, 7-1, in eight innings. The two teams ended the game tied at 1-1, but the Lobos made it up to score six points in the bottom of the eighth. A total of 16 Windsor hitters were struck out against the solid pitcher Conifer. The Wizards bounced back in their next game against George Washington, 12-1, on 11 hits and one error. They got six points in the fourth and have only been struck out three times.

Roosevelt, 4A Regional State: The Roughriders (19-7, 6-2 4A Longs Peak) fell in the first round to Air Academy, 2-1. Sophomore Emmy Supernor represented the Roughriders’ only run, which came with a hit from senior Emily Davis. In Game 2, Roosevelt had a much stronger performance against Rifle. The team swept their opponent 8-0 on 12 hits and two errors. Maerron Lovern senior led the team with three RBIs on a .500 batting average. Roosevelt ended his weekend by beating Air Academy in the losers category, 7-6, to advance to the regional final. The Cadets scored twice early in the third before Roosevelt responded with three late in the period. The Roughriders added four runs in subsequent innings to take a 7-2 lead. Their defense, however, allowed four runs in the start of the seventh. Fortunately, Roosevelt made a save to claim the victory.

Severance pay, 4A Regional State: Severance (17-9, 6-2 4A Longs Peak) won two of his three games this weekend, also earning a berth in the state qualifying round. The Silver Knights beat Northfield, 5-2, on 10 hits and no mistakes. Natalia Puchino senior represented two RBIs. Severance pay fell in Game 2 against Ponderosa, 6-4, despite a 4-1 lead late in the sixth. The Mustangs added five points in sixth and withheld Severance from any extra scoring in seventh frame to win the contest. The Silver Knights returned to defeat Northfield for the second time, 7-1. Severance collected five points in the sixth inning – already seen in his previous game – and an insurance point in the seventh. Puchino and Bridey Smith senior each contributed two RBIs.

Eaton, 3A Regional State: Eaton (23-3, 13-2 3A Patriot) won their regional championship by a dominant margin of 27-1. The Reds started their tournament with a 15-0 win over Cedaredge in just three innings. Eleven of the Reds’ points came in the bottom of the third. Freshman Kiauna Smith has recorded five RBIs. Eaton also added three stolen goals in the victory. For the second game it was pretty much the same. Eaton beat Rocky Ford, 12-1, in five innings and scored seven in the third inning alone. Sophomore Stephanie Bingley had two runs and three RBIs in the win. The Reds also added five more stolen bases in their second regional game.

University, 3A Regional State: The University (20-5, 14-2 3A Patriot) continued their own dominance with a victory in their regional. The Bulldogs started off with a 10-0 win over Meeker in five innings, thanks to some good shots and six mistakes from the Cowboys. In addition, the Bulldogs recorded eight strikeouts. The University then beat Sierra, 11-1, in five innings. The team recorded seven points in the second inning. In addition, first-year pitcher Addison Harding recorded nine strikeouts. Sierra’s lone run came out on top of the first.

Weld Central, 3A State Regional: Two Weld County teams met in the State Region opener, but only Weld Central (12-14, 6-3 4A / 3A Colorado 7) came out victorious. He beat Valley (8-17, 5-11 3A Patriot), 18-0, in three innings. The Rebels scored eight points at the end of the first and nine points at the end of the third. They were helped by 11 Valley commissioning errors. In Game 2, Weld Central fell to Sterling, 2-1. The Tigers pitcher struck out 13 batters en route to the regional victory.

Fort Lupton, 3A Regional State: Fort Lupton (17-8, 7-1 4A / 3A Colorado 7) secured its place in the state tournament after two wins. The Bluedevils won the first game, 10-0, against Limon. In the second clash, Fort Lupton beat Delta, 9-3. The Bluedevils started the game with a four-point first inning to take an early lead. They didn’t maintain the same firepower throughout the game and instead relied on consistent key shots. The Panthers managed to get three points on the board in three separate innings, but they couldn’t get enough to beat Fort Lupton.

Girls volleyball

Greeley Central 3, Centaurus 1, in Greeley: The Wildcats (4-17, 2-10 5A / 4A NCAA) won their Championship game (25-22, 25-17, 15-25, 25-23). The Warriors tried to force a fifth set but Greeley Central was able to hold them back and grab their second conference victory of the season.

Christian Resurrection 3, Lutheran 0, in Loveland: Resurrection Christian (16-0, 8-0 3A Patriot) continues to beat and has won another victory. The Cougars knocked down Lutheran, 3-0, (26-24, 25-21, 25-15). Resurrection recorded 42 kills and seven serving aces in the victory, while the Lions finished with 31 kills and two aces. The Cougars recorded 18 offensive errors and six serve errors, but their shots were enough to secure the victory.

Windsor Charter Academy 3, Vanguard Classical East 0, in Windsor: The Firebirds convincingly beat the Hawks (25-7, 25-23, 25-12). Windsor Charter goes 14-3 overall and 7-0 in the 2A / 3A Foothills League.
