WASHINGTON – Quade Tomlin grew up in the National System, spending time on City Island in Harrisburg when his father Randy was the Senators’ Double-A pitching coach.
Now, young Tomlin is playing professional ball for the first time, spending time in the Florida Complex League as an infielder.
Quade Tomlin signed with the Nationals in 2020 after being one of the best high school shortstops in Virginia. He played for his father in high school at Lynchburg Christian Academy and turned down the chance to play in Division I Liberty – where his father was a pitcher – in order to sign with the Nationals.
“He’s come a long way defensively,” player development coach Jeff Garber, a former minor league shortstop, told Federal Baseball of young Tomlin.
“It’s definitely a big jump. He’s progressed though. His feet and hands are really good; he moved between second base and third.
Tomlin struggled at home, reaching .091 in his first 55 at-bat in the Florida Complex League.
“It was definitely a learning year for him, he’s making adjustments,†Garber said.
Randy Tomlin, originally from Maryland, grew up near Lynchburg and pitched for the Pirates from 1990 to 1994. He won 33 games in minors, 30 in majors and was National League pitcher of the month in June 1992 .
His son trained with Randy Tomlin last year when the minor league season was called off due to the pandemic.
“I am extremely fortunate to have so many opportunities at home with so many people who are ready to help me improve every day,” Quade Tomlin told Federal Baseball last year after signing with the Nationals. .
