TxDOT Uses Car Seat Giveaways To Promote Child Passenger Safety

If there is a child car seat in your vehicle, there is approximately a 50/50 chance that your child will be improperly buckled when in use. A loose clip or belt that isn’t properly fastened can make the difference between a minor injury and an unthinkable disaster. That’s why TxDOT encourages parents to schedule a free safety check for car seats during its annual “Save Me With a Seat” campaign.

To encourage parents to schedule a free safety check for car seats, the “Save Me With a Seat” campaign is traveling the state to help Texans keep their children safe on the road. “Save Me With a Seat” will coincide with National Child Passenger Safety Week, which runs September 19-25, 2021.

“When child car seats are used correctly, they can help reduce injuries and prevent fatalities when children are involved in an accident,” said TxDOT executive director Marc Williams. “We urge parents to schedule a car seat check today to ensure they are safely and correctly using the correct car seat for their child.”

According to the NHTSA, child car seats in passenger vehicles can reduce the risk of fatal injury in accidents by 71% for infants and 54% for toddlers.

The “Save Me With A Seat” campaign will be high profile throughout September as a branded digital signage truck travels across the state making stops in 11 communities in Texas. The digital truck will set up at community events and other high-traffic locations to display “Save Me With a Seat” campaign messages on illuminated LED screens. The digital truck will also display video content that educates parents and caregivers on car seat safety.

TxDOT offers free car seat safety checks year round. Parents and caregivers can visit SaveMeWithASeat.org and enter their zip code to find the nearest TxDOT Road Safety Specialist in their area to make an appointment or view child car seat safety tips.

As an incentive for parents who visit the website, TxDOT is hosting a free giveaway for a child car seat or booster seat. To participate, the public is invited to visit SaveMeWithASeat.org to complete the giveaway form. The contest entry period will run from September 1 to 29, 2021 and a winner will be announced on September 30.

TxDOT reminds drivers that Texas law requires all children under the age of 8 – unless they are over 4 feet 9 inches tall – to be in a car seat whenever traveling in a vehicle tourism. Failure to properly restrain a child can result in a fine of up to $ 250. Children under 13 must travel in the back seat, properly buckled in a seat belt or safety seat.
