The crystal ball prediction for Illini’s target, Cameron Corhen

The recruiting track has cooled in recent weeks for the Illinois basketball team.

Jayden Epps was the most recent engagement, and he verbally engaged on July 13. Since then, the Illini have actually lost an engagement. The squad now has two players signed up for 2022 and a national recruiting ranking of 17.

With at least one scholarship now available for 2022, Illinois must find a player who can come in and put a few minutes into the start of their career. They may have found this in Cameron Corhen.

Corhen is a 6-foot-9, 205-pound center from Sunrise Christian Academy and resides in Allen, Texas. It is classified as a four star rookie and ranked as the No. 114 player in the class of 2022. He is also the No. 18 center in the country and the No. 4 player from the state of Texas.

Confidence that Illinois will be able to land in Corhen rose significantly on Saturday as 247Sports’ Derek Piper made a Crystal Ball prediction for Corhen. He has the Illini landing the big man with a confidence of seven out of 10. Anything over six out of 10 is almost a lock in my eyes.

Corhen is the big man of the future for the Illinois basketball program.

I think all Illini fans must be feeling lucky that Kofi Cockburn has returned for the 2021-22 campaign. I had identified him as gone, and I think most fans thought he wasn’t coming back, either through the NBA or the transfer portal.

Kofi is back for another year, but I imagine this is his last season with the Illini. This means that the No.5 square will be wide open in 2022.

The best option seems to be Omar Payne, but we haven’t seen him on the floor yet. Payne has also been a lackluster player in two seasons with the Florida Gators. Another option would be to become a more athletic and stretchy player in Coleman Hawkins, but that wouldn’t be an ideal situation given that Hawkins is more of a No.4 than a No.5.

That being said, Corhen would be an instant contender for the No.5 spot as a freshman. He would, at a minimum, timeshare with Payne in the role. This is how much I think Corhen can have an impact on the Illini.

Corhen is a sports freak who can do whatever you want him to do on a basketball court. It has good handles for its size and can work its way around the paint. His presence of paint is also astonishing. Corhen can bounce back and use his great physical strength to bring the ball into the hoop.

I didn’t even mention his ability to shoot the ball. While Corhen dominates the paint with his inner presence and ability to block shots, he’s a formidable shooter as well. He can go out and shoot the three-point shot. I also like its midrange 10ft set. It is the complete package.

Honestly, I don’t know why Corhen isn’t in the national top 100. The kid is a beast and would be a great addition to orange and blue. Let’s make it happen.
