Tauren Wells reflects on worship culture today

By Movieguide® Contributor

Christian artist and worship leader Tauren Wells shares his thoughts on worship music today, as well as what he wants listeners to take away from his music.

“We just haven’t done a very good job of leading from our weaknesses, from our injuries,” Wells Explainreferring to people’s preference for putting on a fake image, rather than appearing vulnerable.

Wells shared that he thinks it’s found in Christian music as well.

“Most Christian songs you hear are solved in three minutes or less. You’re at rock bottom, and it seems like there’s no way out – but in the end, life is amazing and Jesus is good,” he explained.

“Yeah, that’s right,” Wells said. “[But] I try to go beyond the surface, and let the waters be rough, to recognize the storm, to recognize the fact that we are sinking. Now, the undercurrent may be joy, the undercurrent may be peace, but we’re still struggling on the surface with what it’s like to feel disappointed, to work really hard for something, and to to fail, to dedicate your life to a relationship and it doesn’t work, to try to be present with your children, only to have them for their own reasons pushing you away.

“We have to deal with how these things really affect us on a soul level,” Wells continued. “And the first thing is to give yourself permission to deal with it – not to put a band-aid or bandage on it.”

The musician shared that he benefited from counseling and encouraged others to share their struggles with loved ones and “find God in it”.

“If you ignore the moon, you don’t appreciate the sun. If you don’t feel what it’s like to be in the dark times, then the warmth and beauty of a sunrise doesn’t mean much to you,” Wells explained. “There’s a morning coming, and of course, I believe that God allows the sun to rise in different seasons of our lives, and we experience his goodness here and now, but don’t overthrow it.”

He continued, “There is a greater horizon and an ultimate morning that we will emerge from the night of this world into the morning that God has for us, where the only thing that shines is the sun,” Wells added. “And there’s no weeping, there’s no tears, there’s no disappointment or hurt, it’s just God’s goodness that shines through eternity. And so even our tears, the scripture says those who sow in tears will reap in joy. Well, that’s not just a promise for the here and now – it is – but it’s a promise of eternal happiness, eternal joy, eternal peace. And I want to remind people that there is a paradise and there is joy in this place.

Wells released new music earlier this year. Movieguide® previously reported:

Christian music artist Tauren Wells offered a word of encouragement to fans as he released his new album, “Joy in the Morning.”

“It’s been two years in the making”, Wells Told THE PEOPLE of the album. “We really invested a lot in that. Really, I just hope people derive great hope from this particular project.

“Hopefully by listening to it, they find the songs they want to put on their workout playlist. The songs they’re going to spin on Saturday mornings when they’re making breakfast,” he said. he continued, “The songs that also really allow them to assess their inner life. I think music does this incredible job of opening up our souls and minds, and allowing us to take inventory of what’s going on in our hearts.

The album features ten tracks that Wells said he wrote primarily during the COVID-19 lockdowns.

“It gave me time to be home and contemplate things I hadn’t even really thought about. I realized that there were many things going on in my heart that I was unaware of. I think a lot of us live like that because we’re so busy and there’s so much going on,” he explained.

“There are a lot of people, like me, who are highly driven, ambitious and success-oriented,” he added. “You chase your goals and your dreams, and you get higher, you work and all that kind of stuff. But the problem with this type of mentality is that often our inner life is neglected.

However, Wells said he used the time in isolation to assess his heart and his career.

“I think time has given me time to pay attention to what’s going on in my heart and process it, which everyone processes differently. I happen to process by writing songs and making music It was a really nice trip,” he said.
