Josephine M. Hammond 1920 – 2022

Sherman, IL—Josephine M. Hammond, 101, of Sherman, died Tuesday, January 18, 2022 at The Villas Senior Care Community. She was born on November 26, 1920 in Pawnee, the daughter of James and Elizabeth (Goins) Gibson. She married Daniel McAfee in 1939 and he predeceased her. Together they raised six children. She married John Hammond on March 20, 1971 and he predeceased her on May 19, 1995.

She is also predeceased by her parents and her five sons, Roy, David, Richard, Gene and Jerry McAfee.

Survivors include his daughter, Judy Campbell of Springfield; 16 grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

Josephine was a member of the Riverton Christian Church. She belonged to VFW Auxiliary #755 in Springfield. She was a life member of DAV in Phoenix, AZ. She loved the outdoors. Her favorite outdoor activities were fishing and working in her garden. Josephine was a homemaker and worked for the State of Illinois for 18 years, retiring at age 84.

Visiting: 10:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m., Tuesday, January 25, 2021 at Staab Funeral Home – Sherman.

Funeral Service: 11:30 a.m., Tuesday, January 25, 2022 at Staab – Sherman Funeral Home with Pastor Larry Crawford officiating.

Interment will follow at Camp Butler National Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Animal Welfare League.
