OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – Harvesters, a community food network based in Kansas City, Missouri, keeps the area’s pantries and banks stocked and ready to serve those in need. And a network of volunteers makes the Harvesters work.

“I love seeing people and meeting people, but I really feel like we’re doing something special here,” said Richard Wood.

A retired high school math teacher, Wood began volunteering at Harvesters when he left the classroom. Five days a month, he runs the “race hall” at Harvesters. The shopping area allows food banks to purchase products and non-perishable items that they think their customers would like.

“It’s fun, it’s like going shopping only if you know you’re helping the people who really need it,” said Steve Caffey, who helps run the pantry at Abundant Life Church at Lee’s Summit.

He said the church has seen its food needs nearly double during the COVID-19 pandemic. He’s thankful that places like Harvesters can help his pantry keep up with the demand.

Wood is part of Harvesters’ reason for meeting demand. He spends days sorting, weighing, documenting, guiding and more.

“A lot of agencies that come will thank us for being here and that sort of thing,” he said. “But we try to say ‘Thank you’ to them because they are the ones who make contact with people. [in need]. “
