After holding the 18-hole lead, Jerry Bruns de Beaufort found himself one step behind the pace before the final round of the 70th Grant Bennett Florence Junior, which will be played at the historic Florence Country Club.

Named after a legendary South Carolina golf instructor, the state’s longest-running men’s golf championship is turning into a shootout. Eight golfers are seated within six strokes of point guard Walker Jennings of Greenville, who sits 6 under after a good 2 under 69 in the second round to go with his first round of 4 under 67.

Bruns, the eminent Beaufort High School, continues his stellar game in 2021 as he sits second in solo at under 5. Bruns led the field after the first lap with his scorching 5-under-66 and followed his lap with a tied second round that included three birdies and three bogeys.

There are also other Beaufort County golfers who are making noise in Florence this week. Sean Engler of the Hilton Head Christian Academy is tied for 12th at 3 above par after a strong tied second round on Tuesday. The rising senior clocked three birdies and three bogeys in his round, easily siting in the cut line of the 35 golfers.

HHCA golfer Aiden LeBlanc will also be selected along with Bluffton native Luke Block. The two golfers are tied for 21st place and sit just 11 strokes behind the leader at 5 over par. Block settled down comfortably in the cup line with a 1-under-par high and low second round that included four birdies.

The 35 low-income golfers have been selected to compete in Wednesday’s final round of one of the state’s most famous junior boys’ tournaments. Former champions include current Clemson star Jacob Bridgeman and former University star Winthrop Sawyer Mills.
