After eight weeks, there are two undefeated Southwest Presidency football teams left, both in the larger school division 4A.
The two teams, the St. John’s Mavericks and the Episcopal School of Dallas Eagles, will meet in Dallas on Friday night.
St. John’s enters the game with a 7-0 record, having won all four of its out-of-district games, beating John Cooper, Greenhill, Fort Bend Christian Academy and The Village School, and its three SPC 4A games, beating Houston Christian, Episcopal and St. Marks.
The victory over Fort Bend Christian Academy ended with a score of 34-33 after the Maverick defense stopped a two-point conversion attempt late in the game to secure the victory.
The victory over Episcopal came after a fourth-quarter interception by Cade McMillan and a winning 39-yard touchdown from running back Cole Allen with 2:29 left.
The Dallas Episcopal School comes on with an 8-0 record. The Eagles played an extra out-of-district game on September 17 while St. John’s experienced a week of inactivity.
The only common opponents between the two teams so far this season are Houston Christian and Episcopal.
St. John’s defeated Houston Christian 37-0 and Episcopal 24-20.
Dallas Episcopal School beat Houston Christian 50-7 and beat Episcopal 25-16.
St. John’s co-captain, senior quarterback John Perdue, a Brown University entry, said the noise surrounding the game was at the level one would expect for a season-ending clash between two undefeated teams, but that the noise was coming almost exclusively from the student body in general as the team approach the game the same way they would against any opponent.
The Dallas Episcopal School enters the game averaging over 42 points and over 440 attacking yards per game this season.
“We’re not going to focus on how much they produce. We’re just going to keep doing what we’re doing, â€Allen said. “We can score too (St. John’s is averaging 37.4 points per game this season).
St. John’s coach Kevin Veltri said the trip to Dallas will follow the same routine the team will follow whenever they travel to Dallas, such as their Sept. 3 game at Greenhill as St. John’s won 42-0.
The team will stop at Woody’s Smokehouse in Centerville and eat their pre-game meal at Luby’s before heading to the stadium to begin their round.
Kick-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
“It’s very important to start strong,†said Veltri. “Most importantly, we know we’re going to be hit in the mouth right off the bat, and we have to make sure we answer that call.”
Perdue said the seniors were trying to arrange a bus to take a group of them to the game and he hopes for strong support from the St. John’s alumni in the Dallas area.
Perdue feels that the team is gaining momentum.
“It’s great to be undefeated, but we have to keep working, keep going towards our goal,” Allen said. “Right now the goal is to beat ESD. “
