BACKUS – Foothills Christian Academy celebrated the graduation of five seniors on Thursday, May 26 in Backus.

The senior graduates were Alex Fenstermaker, Jonathan Fritze, Cole McAllister, Conway Rice and Dylan Rogers.

The ceremony began with academic administrator Earl Ready leading the group in a song of worship. The Grades 4-6 class recited the Pledge of Allegiance to the Bible and the Pledge of Allegiance.

Students from grades 1 to 3 took the stage to read the letters they had written for the graduating class. They urged their older classmates to read their Bibles, not be afraid, and “go to church on Sundays, not stay home and sit on the couch.”

Class speaker Jonathan Fritze addressed the audience. He said how much school meant to him, having left Alaska.

“This school has done a lot for me as a leader, as a person, as a man,” Fritze said.

He concluded by saying, “This school is really something.”

Principal Blair Ecker spoke in general terms about the school’s goals and his desire to make “Christian leaders the biggest thing Backus exports.”

This school has done a lot for me as a leader, as a person, as a man.”

He read part of President Theodore Roosevelt’s famous “Man in the Arena” speech and urged future graduates to fail with “great enthusiasm” if they fail.

The graduation ceremony ended with the presentation of diplomas. Afterwards, the graduates and their friends and families gathered for refreshments and cake, as well as many hugs and a few tears.
