Oklahoma Bible Academy is looking for its third straight win on Friday, when it hosts The Cross Christian Academy (3-2) on their return home.
The Trojans (4-1) have won their last two games by a total of 76 points after losing their first game of the season to Regent Prep 67-22. Starting QB Bodie Boydstun completed 11 of 15 passes for 214 yards and three TDs in the team’s 52-6 win over Sunrise Christian (Wichita, Kan.) Last week.
OBA has won all four of its games averaging 38 points per game and has not played in a game that was decided by less than 30 points.
Trojans head coach Chris Cayot said he strives to keep his players motivated every week by finding ways to improve.
“You keep telling them that we didn’t get this thing, and the scores don’t tell us much at this point, because we play with a lot of different types of teams,†said Cayot.
Friday at 7 p.m., the Trojans will face a team with a very different organizational structure than theirs. The Cross Christian Academy is a private school that serves Teen Challenge of Oklahoma to provide Christian rehabilitation to troubled teens.
“They have very good athletes and football is kind of an outlet for them,†Cayot said. “It’s not that they don’t take it seriously, it’s just a little different approach than the public schools or the OSSAA teams.”
“It has been an interesting business getting to know their administration and their coaches. We can’t wait to meet them.
Their opponent has shown they have the ability to score points on the board as well, but the two have come up against out-of-state teams, and they suffered two losses to Bluejacket and Claremore averaging 50 points.
The Trojans’ offense has remained steady behind Boydstun, who completes 52% of his passes this season with 12 touchdowns and is on track to eclipse 1,600 yards in the air, which would equal his total last season.
Cayot was also impressed with his play on the defensive end of the ball. The flagman plays with his hands in the dirt on the defensive line alongside Jake Colby and David Dupire.
“These three guys up front did a really good job setting the tone for us,†said Cayot.
Waukomis (0-5, 0-0) at Cherokee (1-4, 0-0), Thursday, 7 p.m. – Cherokee and Waukomis are both looking to enter the win column after going through tough times to start the season.
Waukomis will look for their first win under first-year head coach Kelly Husted, while Cherokee looks to stop a three-game slippage since losing to Sharon-Mutual 36-6. The Chiefs under Bryce Schanbacher didn’t have it easy, however, three losses came against three teams who combined for a fair loss won so far this season.
Waukomis faced Waynoka (4-1), Garber (5-0), Class C finalist Timberlake (5-0), Pioneer (4-1) and Covington-Douglas (2-3). The offense is averaging 12.8 points per game, but has scored just four touchdowns since its first game against Waynoka.
Cherokee is averaging 10 points per game, but has been limited to 14 points in his four losses.
Thursday will be the 39th meeting between the two schools, with Cherokee leading the 21-17 all-time series.
