No one should have to do without a warm coat in a cold South Dakota winter. Share the Warmth is a free winter clothing giveaway for troubled Brookings County families. The event relies on community donations and over 200 volunteers for its success.

The club’s goal is to help ease the burden of the cost of necessary winter clothing. After the event, a limited selection of items are available at the club office or at Faith Church year round.

Need outerwear for the winter? Enroll your family in the Share the Warmth program. The organization distributed 1,400 coats last year and, due to the need and the growth of the program, they made some changes and worked hard to make it easier to sign up for winter outerwear, the volunteer registration and donations. Check out the event and visit www.stwbrookings.org to find out more.

GAP’s mission is to develop the youth of the community by building life skills in a safe and supportive environment. GAP is licensed by the South Dakota State Department of Human Services and can care for up to 400 children. The morning program is available for children from Kindergarten to Grade 14. After-school and summer programs are available for children in Kindergarten to Grade 6. An updated fee schedule is available on each site, in letters to parents and on the registration form.

Through recreational, educational and developmental activities, children have the optimal opportunity to grow physically, socially, emotionally and intellectually. GAP serves K-6 children enrolled in Brookings schools by providing them with quality care during the hours before and after school. During the summer, care is provided to any child living in Brookings or whose parents work in the community of Brookings.

While at GAP, children will be offered an activity program, nutritious breakfasts and snacks, and show where they are after school and during the summer. The GAP office is located in Faith Reformed Church. Children attend the following sites: Kindergarten located at First United Methodist Church, Dakota Prairie, Hillcrest, Medary and Camelot Intermediate Elementary Schools.
