YOUNGSTOWN – Mr. Alonzo LaMarr Curry Jr., 68, passed away from this life on Saturday, July 10, 2021.

Alonzo was born April 1, 1953 in Youngstown, the son of Alonzo LaMarr Curry Sr. and Lillian Gillespie Curry.

He was a graduate of East High School (EHS) where he excelled in studies and sports. He taught basketball and football at EHS for three years. He received a college scholarship to Kent State University (KSU) where he distinguished himself in football. He was a replacement at KSU, but due to his exceptional athletic ability, he got a football scholarship.

Alonzo was a member of the Abundant Life Church. He married Barbara Howell on August 15, 1981.

He lets his sons, William Durell Howell, Robert Darnell Howell, Michael Lamar Reynolds and Wesley Thomas Howell Sr .; her special granddaughters, Alexis Meyers, Dominique Venable, Mykalia Reynolds and Ameelya Howell; his special grandsons, Michael Lamar Reynolds Jr. and Wesley Thomas Howell Jr.; as well as 17 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren whom he cherished and loved; her siblings, Linda Maiden, Lillie West, Montaine (Darwin) Ashley, Verna Curry, Rosalyn Curry, Charles Curry and Steven Curry; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Alonzo was predeceased by his parents; grandparents, Lorenzo Curry and Lillie Stephenson Curry, Jake Gillespie and Carrie Holt Gillespie; and stepmother, Mary Gant Gillespie; and his son, Brian McLane Reynolds.

A homecoming celebration in Alonzo’s honor will be held on Tuesday, July 20, 2021 at noon at the Elizabeth Baptist Missionary Church in Youngstown.

The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. to noon Tuesday at church.
